    The short answer

An EIN is the federal tax identification number for a business, required to open bank accounts, hire employees, file business returns and apply for credit. It is issued by the IRS and should be obtained immediately after the entity is formed.

    Frequently asked questions

Does every business need an EIN?
Any entity with employees, more than one owner, or a corporate tax election needs one. Even a single-member LLC should obtain an EIN so the owner social security number is not used for business accounts.
How long does an EIN take?
Online applications by an eligible responsible party are issued immediately. Applications by fax or mail, and those for foreign owners, take several days to several weeks.
What if entity details change after issuance?
The EIN generally stays with the entity through name and address changes, which are reported to the IRS. A change of entity type or ownership structure can require a new number.
